Diablo: Book of Prava

Diablo: Book of Prava is yet another entry made for hardcore fans of the Diablo franchise, functioning like a companion piece ahead of Diablo 4's Lord of Hatred expansion. Out of the five books in the Character Tome series, this is the one with the most substance by far, absolutely packed with lore. If you're planning on diving into the new DLC, this is close to a must-read beforehand.

The book focuses on Prava, so it carries much heavier religious undertones than what we usually see in Diablo. We get her backstory, what motivates her, and why she does the things she does. She's a deeply grey character, and we watch her come to terms with her failure and the death of a god she worships, Inarius, as she starts to lose her grip on both her people and her church. Watching that unravel, her authority, her certainty, her faith, is genuinely one of the strongest parts of the book. It makes her feel human in a way side characters in the games rarely get the chance to.

The influences here are obvious once you notice them. The book draws heavily on real-life religious history, the Inquisition in particular, and that grounding gives Prava's arc a weight that feels earned rather than just lore dressing.

Visually, the book is gorgeous. The illustrations do a great job of reinforcing the tone of Sanctuary's various denominations. My one real complaint is the heavy use of handwritten-style fonts throughout, it genuinely makes parts of the book hard to read. I understand the choice is meant to add to the immersion, treating the book like an in-world religious text, but here it feels overdone to the point of getting in the way.

One thing worth being upfront about: this book is exclusively for Diablo fans. If you don't know the franchise and are looking for an entry point, this isn't it. This is written for hardcore lore fans of Diablo in general, and Diablo 4 in particular, and it delivers exactly what that audience is looking for.
